The Green Party of England and Wales has taken an alarmingly hawkish stance on the war in Ukraine, calling on the entire country to oppose diplomacy and align with NATO’s escalation. In a recent social media post, the party declared:

“All of the UK must stand firmly with Ukraine against Trump’s dangerous propaganda, taken direct from Putin’s playbook.” – Carla Denyer, Green Party Co-Leader

The authoritarian language of this statement—insisting that the entire UK must support their view—raises serious concerns about whether the party still upholds its founding principles of non-violence, diplomacy, and peace-building. Instead of welcoming efforts to negotiate an end to the war, the British Greens dismiss peace talks as “propaganda” and double down on their pro-NATO stance.

Escalation Over Diplomacy

This declaration comes at a time when former U.S. President Donald Trump has pushed for peace talks to end the war in Ukraine—a move that has received cautious support from several European leaders but outright hostility from the Green Party. Rather than advocating for de-escalation, the British Greens appear to cheer on continued bloodshed, framing any attempt at diplomacy as pro-Putin disinformation.

Their stance mirrors that of the German Greens, who have been among the most aggressive supporters of arming Ukraine and pushing for NATO’s expansion. The Workers Party of Britain called out this shift, stating:

“This is a clear statement of support for NATO aggression, the biggest threat to our planet. To post this after the prime minister stated his intention to station British troops in Ukraine is nothing less than joining in the sabre-rattling for war against Russia.”

A Party That No Longer Stands for Peace?

The Green movement was founded on principles of non-violence, yet the Green Party of England and Wales has embraced a militaristic, pro-war agenda. Their unwavering loyalty to NATO’s strategy suggests they have abandoned their core mission of peace-building in favor of mainstream war propaganda.

By insisting that the entire UK must align with their stance, the British Greens are attempting to shut down debate and enforce ideological conformity, rather than engaging in a much-needed discussion on how to end the war through negotiation.

For a party that once stood against militarism, this shift is as troubling as it is hypocritical.
