Alianza Verde, the name of the Colombian Green Party, is protesting a new threat against the head of the Magdalena department Rosita Jiménez, who has once again been the subject of intimidation and harassment due to her political commitment and her defense of human rights.
Rosita Jiménez alerted her party members last week saying that an envelope with an intimidating message was left at her garage door, accompanied by gunshots fired as a death threat.
These threats against this MP elected on the Green list are becoming recurrent in recent times. Alianza Verde considers this a new attack on democracy and women’s rights in Colombia. “It is unacceptable that we seek to silence women who dare to participate in politics and defend the rights of the most vulnerable,” it said in an announcement on its website.
The party calls on the authorities to take immediate measures to protect and ensure the safety and integrity of the deputy and all women who find themselves in similar situations. “It is essential that conditions are guaranteed so that women can participate in politics without fear of reprisals.”
The Green Party calls on society to denounce such actions and join the fight for the protection of women’s rights and the defense of democracy.
