Earlier this month, Global Green News published an article titled Sarah Gabriel Barron Launches Baseless Smears Against Peace Advocates, documenting inflammatory accusations made by former Green Party of Canada leadership candidate Sarah Gabriel Barron. In a social media post, Barron accused prominent anti-war figures Alex Tyrrell and Dimitri Lascaris of spreading “Putin’s propaganda” and “celebrating the death of Ukrainians.”

These accusations were strongly refuted in our article at the time, which emphasized that both Tyrrell and Lascaris have consistently advocated for peace negotiations and diplomacy over militarism and escalation. Their critique of NATO’s proxy war and calls for de-escalation are rooted in a well-documented record of anti-war activism. Rather than engage with their arguments, Barron chose to vilify them using inflammatory rhetoric that mirrors mainstream efforts to silence dissent on the Ukraine war.

We also noted Barron’s ongoing defense of Chrystia Freeland—who has well-documented ties to far-right Ukrainian nationalism, including her grandfather’s Nazi propaganda work—and the broader Green Party leadership’s shift toward militarism under Elizabeth May and Jonathan Pedneault.

New Developments – Dimitri Lascaris Responds

Dimitri Lascaris has now issued a public response directly addressing Barron’s claims. In a forceful and detailed rebuttal, Lascaris calls Barron’s allegation “a bald-faced lie” and challenges her to provide any evidence to back her claim. He then outlines his critique of NATO, Western militarism, and the hypocrisy of those who justify endless weapons shipments while claiming to care about Ukrainians.

“I’m fed up with propagandists like you accusing us of spreading ‘Putin propaganda’. You are the one who is spewing propaganda — namely the propaganda of NATO and the Western war machine.”

Lascaris goes on to argue that continuing the war is a “death sentence for Ukraine,” calling out Western governments for using Ukraine as a proxy in a broader geopolitical conflict aimed at weakening Russia.

“By advocating for more and more weapons to be pumped into Ukraine (as Elizabeth May and Jonathan Pedneault have done), Western governments are dooming the country and its people to destruction.”

He also points to Freeland’s well-documented record of applauding far-right Ukrainian figures and whitewashing her grandfather’s Nazi past:

“Freeland lied shamelessly about her Nazi grandfather, calling him a ‘champion of democracy.’ […] Freeland is a disgrace.”

Lascaris’ statement underscores a growing rift within Canadian progressive politics between those advocating diplomacy and restraint, and those aligning themselves with NATO-aligned, militarized foreign policy.

We will continue to follow this developing story and the broader debate over Canada’s role in the Ukraine conflict.
