Greenpeace, which is an international network of independent organizations which act according to the principles of non-violence to protect the environment, biodiversity and promote peace, invited the Minister of the Environment Eve Bazaiba to explain its attribution, the last year, hundreds of thousands of hectares of so-called “conservation” concessions beyond the surface limit set by law.

Greenpeace Africa notes that the minister would have awarded four concessions, including at least one in her electoral district, to subsidiaries of Wildlife Works Carbon (WWC), a powerful – and very controversial – American company in the carbon scene.

The surface area of three of these concessions totals 771,125 ha. That of the fourth is unknown: the Official Journal indicates that it is 282,295 ha, but places it in a manifestly erroneous manner.

The forest code provides that “forests with a total area greater than 500,000 hectares cannot be granted to the same person [natural or legal], in one or more parts.” Concession contracts covering an area greater than 300,000 ha are approved by presidential order, those beyond 400,000 ha by a law passed by the National Assembly.

Greenpeace Africa announced the minister’s refusal to respond to their request for clarification.
“Concession No. 001/23, in Basoko (Tshopo), was awarded to the Forest Restoration and Development Company (SORFA). According to its statutes, WWC owns 70% of the firm, Prof. Jean-Robert Bwangoy, director of WWC operations in Congo, 10%, and his cousin, a certain Meize Mompongo, 20%,” declared this organization.
