For the ecologists, the PS’s attempt to modify the anti-multiple mandates rules was a bad signal. Ecolo will continue to mobilize for more transparency, for representatives 100% dedicated to the level of power where they are elected and for a political renewal.
While the people of Brussels are waiting for someone to take care of their housing and employment problems, for someone to care about their living environment, for someone to take an interest in their security of existence, the Brussels PS had set itself the priority of reintroducing the multiple mandates for the benefit of a few. “The double-dipping forces candidates and representatives to make a clear promise: to exercise full-time either their mandate as mayor/alderman or their mandate as a member of parliament,” recalls John Pitseys, the leader of the Ecolo group in the Brussels Parliament.
“By putting an end to the double-dipping in 2022, the legislator has complicated the task of those who would like their power to be unshakeable and unavoidable.”
Indeed, the text tabled by the PS would have allowed representatives to play on all political tables and to keep warm the mandate they want depending on the circumstances. The double-dipping, even and especially in the form of impediment, is a way of accumulating power/calcifying one’s little power “150 days after the elections, it is now time for the parties negotiating the formation of a regional government to tackle the problems of housing, living conditions, and the security of existence of residents,” concludes John Pitseys.
