The Green Party of Canada has condemned U.S. President Donald Trump’s reported proposal to forcibly displace Palestinians from Gaza, calling it an “outrageous and unlawful” violation of international law. However, the statement notably avoids terms like “genocide” and “ethnic cleansing,” which human rights organizations have widely used to describe the situation.

In the February 5 statement, Elizabeth May called Trump’s plan a “horrifying attempt to erase an entire people from their homeland,” while Jonathan Pedneault urged Canada to recognize Palestine and use diplomatic tools to oppose further injustice. MP Mike Morrice added that “Canada must be on the side of human rights and moral clarity.”

Despite the strong wording, May’s past opposition to the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement and their support for military aid to Ukraine raise questions about the consistency of their stance on international peace. Pedneault has also backed domestic arms manufacturing earlier this week, a position at odds with the Green Party of Quebec’s anti-war platform.

While their statement against Trump is notable, critics argue that the Green Party’s leadership still needs to clarify its foreign policy stance beyond this issue.
