Every three years, New Zealand holds general elections. The 2023 general election will take place on Saturday, October 14. As these election deadlines approach, the Green Party has released its initial list of candidates for the 2023 election, which will now inform the membership voting process.

“With more Green MPs, we can set the direction of the next government and take faster climate action, protect nature and rebalance wealth so everyone has what they need to support their families,”

said Green co-leader James Shaw.

He hailed that the Green Party has brought about change for people and the planet in the five years since the Green Party entered government. He said he was proud of what his party’s MPs have accomplished, while acknowledging that the pace of change has been too slow.
The co-leader of the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand hopes to see a government capable of putting in place bold measures to build a cleaner, fairer and climate-friendly future where everyone can afford a warm home and the food on the table.

“2023 will be one of the most consequential elections we have had in Aotearoa for decades. I am confident that with such a diverse, experienced group of Green Party candidates Aotearoa will elect the most progressive, climate focused Government we have ever had,”

said James Shaw.

For his part, Marama Davidson, also co-leader of the Green Party, pointed out that this year the Green Party is heading into the elections with a remarkable group of candidates. He believes that the more elected MPs the Green Party has, the stronger its voice will be and the more we, the party, will be able to do to protect the climate, restore nature and build an Aotearoa that works for everyone.

“The Green Party is a Te Tiriti-based political party and I’m proud to see this reflected so clearly in our initial list. Such a strong Māori voice will help us to make sure that the next government does more to uphold the Crown’s promise to guarantee tino rangatiratanga of tangata whenua over their whenua, kainga and taonga katoa,”

said Marama Davidson.

He showed that 2023 must be the best chance for the green party to elect a government that will take the necessary steps to build a climate-friendly Aotearoa that works for everyone. He said the initial list already shows how strong the Green Party will be.

The 2023 New Zealand general election which will determine the composition of the 54th Parliament of New Zealand is scheduled to be held on October 14, 2023, after the dissolution or expiration of the currently elected 53rd Parliament. Voters will elect 120 members to the unicameral New Zealand House of Representatives under the Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) voting system, a proportional representation system in which 72 members will be elected from single-member electorates and 48 members from closed party lists.
