While the swearing-in of federal deputies took place last week in the Chamber, the different political groups must also appoint their respective leaders. For Greens, the choice fell on Sarah Schlitz, who will be co-head of the Ecolo-Groen group with Petra De Sutter.
The Liège native was the first Federal Secretary of State for Gender Equality and Opportunities from 2020 to 2023 within the Vivaldi government, before being re-elected as a federal deputy in June 2024.
She will work in tandem with her Green counterpart Stefaan Van Hecke, then with former Deputy Prime Minister Petra De Sutter, when the new federal government is installed.
“Ecology is a lever to guarantee a dignified life and preserved health. Reduce energy bills, make the train more accessible, support Belgian farmers by promoting local products, stop public spending on subsidies for fossil fuels, helping the victims of the floods to get back on their feet, Protecting every citizen from Ostend to Arlon, this is the project that we are carrying out”, commented Ms. Schlitz, quoted in the press release.

Green parliamentarians will also be vigilant in preserving the green and social advances, as well as those in terms of equal opportunities, initiated in recent years. Through their hard work and experience, Sarah Schlitz and Rajae Maouane will work to improve the daily lives of all Belgians. By relying in particular on the expertise of numerous citizen associations, in a constant dialogue between civil society and parliamentarians.
After the failure of the Greens in the last election, the number of Ecolo-Groen deputies fell from 21 to 9 in the Chamber. On the French-speaking side, only two Ecolo deputies remain: Sarah Schlitz and Rajae Maouane.
The swearing-in session of the deputies elected on June 9 took place on Wednesday.
