Abhijeet Manay has been nominated as the party’s candidate for the Beaches-East York riding in the 2022 provincial election.

Manay’s Background

In the 2018 provincial election, Manay ran as MPP for the Mississauga-Streetsville riding. He was particularly interested in increasing Ontario’s affordable housing market. He presented ways of tackling the root of the problem (Read Toronto article: Green party candidate Mississauga-Streetsville riding Abhijeet Manay)

Although Manay did not win the MPP election, he did become the Deputy leader of the Green Party of Ontario in September of 2018. He continues to address issues of affordable housing in Toronto and supports strategies needed for the success of small businesses.

Currently, he serves as the Party’s shadow cabinet critic for Health and Long-Term Care. He has been advocating for elders, essential workers and marginalized communities throughout the pandemic.

Aside from his contribution to Ontario’s Green Party, Manay also works in the learning and development sector at Reena; a non-profit organization that promotes the well-being of people living with developmental disabilities. He also works as an Academic Executive officer and sits on the Board of Directors at iREAM, a Mississauga-based non-profit.

Candidacy for 2022 election

In an April 20th press release, the Green Party of Ontario announced Manay’s nomination as a candidate for the Beaches-East York riding. Although the next provincial election is not expected to be held until June 2022, Manay believes that his experience running for MPP in 2018 will help his political platform. In the press release, Manay revealed why he was inspired to become a member of provincial parliament:

“I was inspired to join politics by my grandfather who was a member of parliament back in India. His example inspires me to this day to always fight for the little guy,”

In 2018, Abhijeet Manay helped the current Leader of the Green Party of Ontario, Mike
Schreiner, win the election in Guelph. Schreiner’s success made him the first-ever Green MPP elected to the Ontario Legislature.

Manay shared some similarities between his grandfather and Schreiner:

“That’s why I joined the Green Party of Ontario: because Mike Schreiner’s drive for justice and sustainability reminds me of the same passion my grandfather had. It’s an honour to be in a party that’s creating a greener and more caring Ontario for generations to come.”

Mike Schreiner appreciates Manay’s work:

“Abhijeet has served the Green Party admirably as Deputy Leader … His passion and energy for issues like affordable housing, autism and health care is exactly what we need to build back smarter out of the current crisis.”

In the 2022 election, Manay will be up against Berns-McGown of the NDP and Mary-Margaret McMahon of the Liberal party. In his promotional video, Manay explains that if he wins the Beaches-East York riding, he wishes to implement a guaranteed livable income, affordable housing for all, a green infrastructure program, and a universal health care system that includes pharma care as well as mental healthcare.
