It was during a special general meeting organized in the Binaboli conference room in Honiara, on the sidelines of the preparation of the National General Election of 2024, that Green Party Solomon Islands (GPSI) wanted to elect its new office bearers.
In a statement, GPSI said the election was necessary to ensure GPSI has a fully functioning executive to lead and prepare the Green Party for the upcoming National General Election in 2024.
The statement said the GPSI is a political party that promotes sustainable development based on the principles of ecological wisdom, social justice, participatory democracy, non-violence, sustainability and respect for diversity. The party says it firmly believes it has the right mix of policies for the sustainable economic development of the Solomon Islands.
The Green Party leadership, however, has condemned the current unsustainable harvesting of tuna stocks by foreign fishing vessels in the Solomon Islands, as well as logging and mining which party leaders say brings very little return to landowners. , ruins the environment and causes serious negative social impacts.
GPSI further recommends that the government of the day take tough decisions to protect national resources in the interest of the country.
The Green Party of the Solomon Islands, for its part, believes that there is a need for a huge policy shift, as well as a reallocation of resources based on ecological principles, to stimulate the growth of the private sector, and a broader tax base, in order to achieve social justice and economic empowerment for all Solomon Islands.
The vacancies, filled at a special general meeting, were President Lawrence Makili, Treasurer Carl Mahehaita, Assistant Treasurer Pauline Ama.
The current officers holding their positions are Vice President Ruddy Oti, Secretary Judith MacLean, Deputy Secretary Redley Ausopa, Women’s Representative Surita Piva and Youth Representative Fay Bonuga.
In the statement posted on its website, the Green Party expressed the wish to present candidates for the next national general elections of 2024 synchronized for the national Parliament, the city council of Honiara and the provincial governments.
In September 2022, Manasseh Sogavare, the Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, had obtained the approval of Parliament to postpone the elections until 2024 at the earliest, which the opposition had interpreted as a desire to undermine democracy.
