Greens secure victory in Mid Suffolk. The Green Party won majority control of a local authority in the UK for the first time. Victory in Mid-Suffolk lays the groundwork for new MPs in the general election.
The Greens won 24 seats on Mid Suffolk District Council, six more than needed for a majority in the 34-seat authority.
The council was previously led by a 16-seat minority Conservative administration.
The party could become East Hertfordshire’s biggest party with 15 wins and two catches so far and is Forest of Dean’s biggest party with 15 seats so far. On top of that, the Greens have the biggest vote share in Worcester, winning four seats and defying predictions that Labor would take overall control of the Council. The local elections also cemented the Party’s standing as an opposition in the Labor strongholds of South Tyneside and Exeter.

“We can’t wait to get to work,” said Andy Mellen, leader of the Mid Suffolk Green Party.

He said this result shows that there is a real appetite for a group of thoughtful, practical people who are committed to bringing about positive change in their community. “That’s why so many people voted for us,” he gloated.
He did not fail to thank all those who voted for their party while trusting them to get things done.

“We are excited about the challenges ahead and believe there is a lot we can achieve now that we have control of the Council, particularly in areas such as housing, planning and making the Council more accessible. This is not a protest vote. The Greens have steadily built a presence here for many years. They have a reputation for getting things done and that’s what people voted for,” he said.

Co-leader of the Green Party in England and Wales, Adrian Ramsay, for his part said the party had achieved “fantastic results” in rural and urban areas, winning seats from Labor as well as the Conservatives . He said victory in Mid Suffolk would ‘open the door to electing the region’s first Green MP as well – to really represent people nationally as well as locally’.
