(VICTORIA, Australia)- The Victorian Labor Government and the Victorian Liberal-National Opposition have voted against a Greens motion to drill for gas underneath a national park near the tourist site Twelve Apostles.

In early 2021, Victoria’s Environment Minister, Lily D’Ambrosio, gave oil and gas company Beach Energy consent to drill new gas underneath Port Campbell National Park. The Greens motion aimed at preventing this.

“In the middle of a climate crisis, it’s outrageous that the Labor Victorian Government is allowing new gas drilling off Victoria’s iconic coastline,” said Ellen Sandell MP, Deputy Leader of the Victoria Greens Party on The Greens Victoria Page.

The Greens released an open letter addressed to Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews to withdraw the gas drilling.

As of October 18th, the letter has received more than 12,500 signatures, which the community can continue to sign.

MP Sandell stated, “we need to protect our environment and precious animals by transitioning away from fossil fuels, not drilling for more of it.”
