The Green Ecologist Party of Mexico welcomed the agreement reached by the Political Coordination Council in the Congress of the Union, which opens the way to the possibility of obtaining a constitutional reform on Animal Welfare throughout the country.
Karen Castrejón Trujillo, national leader of the Green Party, stressed that the proposal responds to the alarming reality of animal abuse in the country since, according to various organizations, seven out of ten domestic animals in Mexico suffer from some form of abuse. In addition, Mexico ranks third in the world in animal abuse and first in Latin America.

“These data reflect the need for a solid legal framework that protects animals and promotes a culture of respect for them,” said the environmental leader.
She explained that the reform proposes the modification of articles 3, 4 and 73 of the Constitution in order to incorporate the teaching of care and respect for animals into the curricula, prohibit the mistreatment of animals and establish the obligation of the State to guarantee their protection and conservation, and grant the Congress of the Union the power to legislate on the protection of animals, including the prevention of mistreatment, even in animals intended for human consumption.
She assured that this reform, which must be analyzed, discussed and voted on soon in the Chamber of Deputies, represents a fundamental step for the recognition of animal rights in the Mexican Constitution.
Likewise, it highlights the commitment of the Mexican legislative power to promote a more respectful and ethical relationship between human beings and animals, with a view to creating an environment in which the rights of non-human living beings are taken into account and protected in a comprehensive manner.
