Born on 15 December 1955 in Recklinghausen/NRW; married. Studied social work and law.1977 to 1979 social worker at the Berlin-Tegel Prison. 1985 second state examination and admission as a lawyer.

Since 1979 member of the Alternative List Berlin; 2000 to 2001 party chairwoman of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen; 1989 to 2000 member of the Berlin House of Representatives; 1989 to 1990 and 1998 to 2000 parliamentary party chairwoman of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen.

Member of the Bundestag since 2002; 2001 to 2005 Federal Minister of Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture; October 2005 to 2013 Chairwoman of the Bündnis 90/Die Grünen parliamentary group; 2014 to 2017 Chairwoman of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Consumer Protection in the German Bundestag.
