The Mexican Greens are protesting against anyone who exposes wild animals for commercial purposes and in unauthorized places, they are demanding severe sanctions against offenders who will have to pay fines of five thousand to five million pesos.

“We recognize that exhibition in cages or display cases are, for no reason, an example of dignified treatment, hence the need to incorporate into law the prohibition of exhibition for commercial purposes of wild species”, said Senator Alejandra Lagunes.

This Green Party senator presented an initiative aimed at banning the exhibition of wild animals for commercial purposes. She regrets that today the General Law on Wildlife punishes mistreatment but authorizes the exhibition of animals, so that the exhibition and handling of animals in unsuitable places and in inadequate conditions, as lack of food, become “common”, water and care against illnesses.

“In this situation, we recognize that exposure in cages or display cases are, for no reason, an example of dignified treatment, hence the need to incorporate into law the prohibition of exposure to purposes of wild animal trade,” said the ecologist.

He recalled complaints made by foreigners on social media, highlighting the use of wild animals to take photos in the streets of Playa del Carmen, in the state of Quintana Roo, as well as complaints about the exhibition of wild animals in public and street markets in Mexico City, such as the Sonora Market.

“Animals are living beings, so it is unacceptable that in the 21st century society maintains practices that threaten their well-being and the balance of nature in general, such as the exhibition and handling of wild animals in the streets or in small establishments,” she concluded.
