Nuclear power “will leave a legacy of debt and radioactive waste for generations to come. Every vote for the Scottish Greens is a vote against new nuclear power,” said party co-leader Lorna Slater MSP.
The party reiterated its opposition to nuclear power, saying its greater inclusion in the energy mix could hamper the transition to 100% renewable energy. The Scottish Greens say they will oppose any attempt to extend or impose it.

Britain’s Conservative government has pledged to triple nuclear power by 2050 and announced plans for the biggest nuclear expansion in 70 years. Similarly, Keir Starmer’s Labor Party has promised to extend it, with Mr Starmer calling it a “vital part” of his energy plan.

Co-leader Lorna Slater strongly denounced this speech by Labor leader Keir Starmer, which she considers very dangerous.

“The disastrous mismanagement of Hinkley Point C tells us everything we need to know about the unreliable and expensive nature of nuclear power. The project is now 14 years behind schedule and costs have reached £46 billion, seven times Scotland’s total annual investment budget. Even though Hinkley is on the south coast of England, Scottish households will be paying for this travesty for decades. It is scandalous that instead of learning the lessons of this catastrophic mismanagement, the Conservatives and Labor are pledging even more money for new nuclear power,”

said co-leader Lorna Slater

It is worth noting that in May 2024, the outgoing Secretary of State for Scotland, Alister Jack, said he hoped the next UK government would work with anti-independence parties at Holyrood to force through a new nuclear reactor to Scotland.

“We cannot afford to make the mistake of commissioning a new nuclear power station. The Scottish Greens will oppose new nuclear power and the expansion or renewal of Scotland’s Torness nuclear power station,” can we read in an extract from the Scottish Greens manifesto published on their website.
