The grim reality is that these types of news stories no longer come as a surprise. Police brutality in the United States has been a major issue over the last few decades. This issue becomes even more contentious when people of colour are involved.
A study was done in 2019 by the GBD 2019 Police Violence US Subnational Coordinators to show that death caused by police has a disproportionately impacted people of a certain race, usually Hispanic or Afro-American. The same study also found that over half of all deaths due to police brutality go unreported in the USA, according to the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) whose job it is to compilate data on the subject.
The Green Party of the United States believes this is an issue that needs to be dealt with today. The party has a Black Caucus made up of black leaders and activists who are actively working to fight against these human rights violations. They are currently calling for two things: Community based policing, and independent progressive black candidates to change the system from within.

Community based policing ensures that law enforcement agencies reflect the racial makeup of their communities and are democratically controlled. We need to see these changes”

The Green Party of the United States is fighting to have their proposed Congressional Resolution of community policing implemented. The Party wants public safety to become a priority in the country, and for everyone to feel safe.
