Access to clean drinking water, literacy, contraception, school meals, and the fight against female genital mutilation: these are life-altering advancements that Finnish aid has championed in recent years. For the Finnish Green Party, Vihreät – De Gröna, these fundamental human rights are now under direct threat due to a dark era in global cooperation.
Last year, official global development assistance (ODA) plummeted by over 23%, leaving 64 million more people without vital assistance. Conservative estimates warn that an additional 9.4 million people—including 2.5 million children under five—will lose their lives due to these funding gaps. The Finnish Greens emphasize that these human tragedies are entirely preventable, accusing world leaders of turning their backs on those in need.
Vihreät Condemns the Retreat from Global Responsibility
While the United States, under Donald Trump’s leadership, remains the largest driver of these cuts, it is far from alone. Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, and France have all followed suit. In Finland, Vihreät strongly criticizes the current government for slashing its own development budget by 20% to 30%, representing a total loss of over 1.3 billion euros.
The Greens firmly reject the stance of Minister for Foreign Trade and Development, Ville Tavio, who recently claimed that “traditional development aid is outdated” and that Finland’s own economic interest must be the new baseline. Vihreät argues that this perspective shows a complete lack of understanding of development policy, which is explicitly designed to foster long-term stability, democracy, the rule of law, and human rights.
Trade Cannot Replace Solidarity
In its official stance, the Green party stresses that it is deeply simplistic to assume that expanding commercial relationships can replace humanitarian development aid. Fragile states cannot protect their most vulnerable citizens through trade policy alone. They require direct structural support to eliminate hunger, establish basic healthcare, and build educational infrastructures.
Furthermore, Vihreät notes that development policy is a cornerstone of shared global stability. Conflicts, infectious diseases, and climate change do not respect national borders. While the party fully supports Finland’s increased and necessary commitment to Ukraine, it maintains that this aid must not come at the expense of other fragile populations worldwide.
An Assault on the Rules-Based Order
This global retreat occurs at a time when multilateral cooperation is under unprecedented strain. Vihreät expresses deep concern over the undermining of the UN and international law, highlighted by recent political rhetoric targeting the International Criminal Court (ICC). For a small nation like Finland, a robust rules-based international order is the ultimate security insurance.
The Green party also warns against cost-saving proposals to merge UN agencies like UNFPA and UN Women, which threaten to significantly weaken targeted advocacy for the sexual and reproductive rights of women and girls.
Ultimately, Vihreät asserts that genuine security cannot be achieved through military spending alone; it requires robust conflict prevention and peace mediation. By cutting over €13 million from crisis management budgets and €700,000 from peace mediation, the government is shrinking Finland’s diplomatic tools just when global conflicts have reached a post-WWII high. The Green party calls for an immediate course correction to restore empathy and global responsibility to foreign policy.
