In a press release titled “Refusal to Celebrate a Marriage: A Serious Breach of the Rule of Law,” the Bourg-lès-Valence Greens express “their deep concern following the refusal of Ms. Marlène Mourier, mayor of the town, to celebrate a marriage between a French citizen and an undocumented Tunisian national.”

He continued: “By opposing this union, even though it had been authorized by the public prosecutor, the mayor has deliberately chosen to ignore the judicial authority’s decision, thus setting a particularly worrying precedent. A mayor has neither the power nor the legitimacy to substitute his or her personal opinion for court decisions. This widely publicized refusal seems more a matter of political communication than of genuine legal concern. By exploiting this situation, Ms. Mourier is participating in an ideological drama, which fuels far-right rhetoric and unnecessarily divides our community.”

“Municipal management is accumulating shortcomings”

He continued: “This spectacular performance barely masks a more worrying reality: municipal management is accumulating shortcomings. Whether it concerns the ecological transition, the quality of public services, social policy, or the relationship with residents, the challenges are numerous and remain largely unaddressed. A local elected official must act in strict compliance with the law and republican institutions. If the Mayor is unable to fulfill all of her responsibilities within this framework, it is up to her to draw the necessary conclusions. Respect for the rule of law is not up for discussion. It is enforced.”
