Responding to the findings, Green Party Spokesperson for Nature, Heritage, and Agriculture, Senator Malcolm Noonan, stated that the report reflects a total collapse in regulatory enforcement and environmental investment. « With more river water bodies declining than improving, it is clear that this is a Government failure to implement its own policies and plans, » Noonan stated.

The Senator directly linked the crisis to political maneuvering in Europe, arguing that the retention of the nitrates derogation was grounded in lobbying rather than science. He warned that the crisis will intensify due to state plans to expand one-off rural housing and bypass the Climate Act in the upcoming Critical Infrastructure Bill: « Every action this Government takes is an action against nature, water and the environment. »

Historic Fish Kills and International Embarrassment

The Green Party highlighted that two of the largest fish kills in the history of the Irish State have occurred under the current administration’s watch, with official responses failing to match the gravity of the situation.

Noonan concluded that this persistent failure is a major diplomatic embarrassment as Ireland prepares to step into the EU Presidency, where it is supposed to be leading international calls for environmental and nature protections.

The Green Roadmap for Water Restoration

While slamming official indifference, the Greens pointed to local catchment communities who are already demonstrating how to restore local waters. To reverse this environmental tragedy, the Green Party is calling for:

  • Ramping up state funding for community catchment trusts and group water schemes.
  • Providing direct financial support for regenerative farming and nature-based solutions.
  • Scaling up the removal of artificial river barriers.
  • Investing heavily in higher standards of wastewater treatment and developing a strict exit plan from the nitrates derogation.
