The Czech Green party Zelení has extended its warmest thanks to voters following a highly successful municipal election campaign. The party successfully secured 160 council seats across 89 towns, villages, and municipal districts, spanning every single region of the Czech Republic. The newly elected cohort features a balanced mix of highly experienced local representatives and long-serving mayors alongside fresh faces entering municipal politics for the first time. Dozens of additional Green representatives were also elected on independent community lists officially endorsed by the party.
Municipalities as the Frontier for Climate Action
Green leaders emphasize that these local victories are crucial given the current policy shortfalls at the national level. “Town halls are now deciding on vital issues that the central government has abandoned,” stated Gabriela Svárovská, Member of Parliament and co-chair of Zelení. She noted that while the parliamentary majority pushes forward developer-friendly building legislation, Green-led towns will utilize public land and municipal housing to ensure affordable rent. Furthermore, while the Ministry of the Environment stalls on climate targets, local councils will take charge by planting trees, managing water retention, and preparing streets for intensifying summer heatwaves.
Matěj Pomahač, party co-chair who won a council seat in Prague 16, reiterated that the municipal level remains the traditional lifeblood of the Czech Greens. Voters choose Green candidates based on tangible, everyday results: the revitalization of public spaces, the expansion of urban greenery, traffic calming initiatives, and the development of safe cycling lanes and pedestrian zones.
Major Gains Across Regional Strongholds
The Green electoral momentum led to remarkable results in several major urban centers:
- Brno: The Zelené Brno list secured 8,91% of the vote and 6 city council seats. In the districts, Zelená pro Komín, led by Mayor Milada Blatná, won an absolute victory with 42%. Green alignments also took 34% in Nový Lískovec (Jana Drápalová) and 34% in Jundrov (Ivana Fajnorová).
- Prague: For the first time in eight years, Zelení successfully regained seats on the Prague City Council and won representation across multiple municipal districts.
- Horní Jiřetín: The Green Party and independent candidates association, led by incumbent Mayor Vladimír Buřt, scored a landslide victory with 69,93% of the vote, securing 8 out of 11 council seats.
- Prostějov: The Na rovinu! coalition (Greens, TOP 09, and STAN), led by Green candidate Jana Jílková, emerged victorious with 32,20% of the vote and 13 seats, sending a clear message to the populist ANO movement in its traditional Moravian stronghold.
- Příbram: A joint ticket between the Pirate Party, the Greens, and independents captured 16,50% of the vote, electing Zelení Vice-Chairman Tomáš Mígl to the town council.
Solid results were also celebrated in Nový Jičín, Kladno, Ústí nad Labem, and Cheb. Moving forward into their council terms, Zelení representatives are committed to fighting for affordable housing, climate resilience, community shade and green infrastructure, accessible local schools, affordable energy solutions, and strict financial transparency in municipal governance.
