The second round of the Polish presidential election, which will be held this Sunday, is being closely watched across Europe. Although none of the candidates are Kremlin supporters, as was the case recently in Romania, the differences between the presidential candidates are fundamental. The support of the Czech party, as well as that of the Polish and European Greens, goes to Rafał Trzaskowski, a candidate who defends democratic values, the rule of law, and European cooperation.
Poland is the fifth most populous country in the European Union, a semi-presidential republic, and a key state on the eastern flank of the EU and NATO. The outcome of the presidential election could therefore have a significant impact not only on Polish politics, but also on European stability and security in the region.
Rafał Trzaskowski (Civic Platform – PO) and Karol Nawrocki (Law and Justice – PiS) are vying for votes in the second round. While both affirm their support for NATO and the EU, their positions diverge significantly on important issues, including the climate crisis, minority rights, and European integration.
Trzaskowski advocates ecological modernization, equality for all, and democratic institutions. His opponent, Nawrocki, represents a conservative and nationalist line, denying the climate crisis and opposing deeper European cooperation.
