Green Party figure Åsa Lindhagen has announced her her departure from local politics in Stockholm. After contributing to the city’s governance for years, Lindhagen is now focusing on national issues. This decision marks a turning point in her professional career and the end of an era where she was a prominent voice for sustainable development and social justice in Stockholm’s political landscape.
In her statement, Lindhagen expressed gratitude towards her colleagues and constituents, highlighting the importance of continued efforts towards environmental sustainability and inclusive policies. The Green Party, which has been influential in recent city administrations, will now look to other leaders to fill the void left by her departure.
“I feel great pride and gratitude for the work we have done in Stockholm. Now I want to be involved and influence at a national level again,” says Åsa Lindhagen (MP).
Lindhagen has had a variety of jobs in the city of Stockholm and in the Riksdag for the past 15 years. She has served as environment and climate mayor in the city since the 2022 election. Last term, she was Minister for Gender Equality and Minister for Financial Markets in the red-green government.
She has previously been a member of the Riksdag and before that, social mayor in the city and group leader for the Green Party Stockholm City.
– We have been a clear counterforce to the government’s policy, by investing in reducing emissions instead of increasing them and standing up for a city where everyone is included. Now I want to help influence at a national level to take Sweden in a new direction, says Åsa Lindhagen (MP).
Lindhagen’s influence extended beyond typical political duties, as she actively engaged with the community and inspired many with her commitment to creating a more equitable society.
