LONDON — The Green Party of England and Wales has shattered membership records, gaining over 15,000 new members in just one week. This unprecedented surge follows a landmark by-election win and a polling breakthrough that places the Greens ahead of both Labour and the Conservatives.

A Week of Record-Breaking Milestones

The party’s membership has skyrocketed, growing by more than 2,000 people per day since its victory in the Gorton and Denton by-election. Total membership now stands at over 215,000, marking a new era for Green politics in the UK.

This surge coincides with a historic Sky News/YouGov poll, which places the Green Party at 21% of the national vote—its highest level ever recorded. For the first time, the Greens have overtaken both Labour and the Conservatives (tied at 16%), moving within touching distance of Reform UK (23%).

“A Genuine Sense of Hope”

Hannah Spencer, the newly elected MP for Gorton and Denton, attributes this success to a public desire for authentic change.

“In Gorton and Denton, I heard time and time again that people finally felt included in politics,” Spencer stated. “That hope is now reflected in the ballot box, the polls, and this massive influx of new members. People appreciate that we aren’t just identifying problems—we are offering practical, real-world solutions.”

Contrast with Labour’s Rhetoric

The Green Party’s rise stands in stark contrast to the current strategies of the Labour Party. Spencer criticized Labour for “aping Reform’s grubby practice” of targeting migrants to score political points.

“Labour hasn’t learned the lessons of Gorton and Denton,” Spencer added. “Voters dislike the blaming of migrants for systemic issues. We believe everyone should be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their origin. These divisive policies only fracture our communities.”

Eyes on the May Elections

With local elections in England and Senedd elections in Wales approaching this May, the Greens are prepared to convert polling momentum into seats. The party’s platform focuses on bold action regarding:

  • The Cost of Living Crisis
  • Housing Affordability
  • NHS Funding
  • Substantial Democratic Reform

“We are breaking records left, right, and centre,” Spencer concluded. “Believe me when I say we’re only just getting started!”
