On September 26th, India’s Green Party has called for a total elimination of nuclear weapons across the world.

The India Green Party also known as IGP says the eradication of nuclear arsenals will lead to lasting peace and sustainability in the world.

The party’s national head office released a statement on September 26th on the occasion of the ‘International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons’.

The IGP‘s president, Suresh Nautiyal, expressed concerns over the ignorance of nuclear armed countries towards elimination of such weaponry.

It is a sad story that the countries possessing nuclear weapons have not taken concrete steps to eliminate these despite the fact that achieving global nuclear disarmament was one of the oldest goals of the United Nations. said Nautiyal.

Nautiyal added that the issue was the subject of the General Assembly’s first resolution in 1946. The General Assembly had a mandate to make specific proposals for the control of nuclear energy and the elimination of atomic weapons and all other major weapons adaptable to mass destruction. However, Nautiyal pointed out, the goal has not been realized after so many decades. He said the slow pace of nuclear disarmament has led to frustration among the sane countries and the people.

The International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

In December 2013, the United Nations General Assembly declared September 26th as the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
Since then the day has been observed every year by Green activists and other human rights movements.

However the IGP says there are currently 13,080 nuclear weapons remaining across the world.

In the meantime countries like the UK are preparing to get more nukes for their arsenal.

Who has the most nuclear weapons in the world?

According to the latest report published by the Statista, Russia and the United States continue to possess the most extensive nuclear arsenals. While Russia has 6,255 thousand warheads, the U.S. maintains 5,550 thousand.
In the meantime China is the third largest holder of nuclear arms. But it has less than a tenth the supply of Moscow or Washington.

While the list is not so long, several other nations have been hoping to get their hands on nukes. Last month Australia signed a pact with the U.S. and the UK for a nuclear submarine deal.
Such deals can raise the prospect of a nuclear arms race across the globe.
