The occupation by AFC/M23 rebels of several territories, including Goma and Bukavu, has complicated the lives of environmental defenders who had sought refuge there, according to Acedh. The report identifies the different areas most affected by violations of the rights of environmental defenders: heavily agricultural areas and areas where national parks are concentrated, for example, as well as mining areas.

Founded by Olivier Ndoole, Acedh has documented seven murders and one kidnapping of defenders. “Also in oil-block areas, as well as in mining areas. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, there have been cases of arbitrary arrests, intimidation, and even unfair trials against human rights defenders,” denounces Olivier Ndoole.

Arbitrary Detention

Among the cases cited is that of Sadiki Shemukobya Espoir, arrested by the National Intelligence Agency (ANR). “The ANR detained him while he was simply supporting local communities against their land, which was invaded by the Kibali Gold Mine company. He is being deprived of medication. He is in detention. The lawyers have requested the files. For over a month, they [the ANR, editor’s note] have refused to release the files,” explains Mr. Ndoole.
