A staff member from Elizabeth May’s team has dismissed Global Green News as “not a news site,” attempting to discredit the platform as it continues publishing critical reports on the Green Party’s leadership crisis. The comment comes amid backlash over the party’s decision to appoint Jonathan Pedneault as co-leader without a leadership race—a move condemned by longtime party members as undemocratic.
The staff member’s claim is based on the fact that Meta has not blocked Global Green News on Facebook, unlike mainstream Canadian media outlets that were restricted due to Meta’s response to the Trudeau government’s legislation forcing tech companies to fund journalism. However, critics argue this reasoning is flawed, as Meta’s bans are based on legal definitions under Bill C-18, not journalistic integrity.
Supporters of Global Green News see the attack as an attempt to deflect from the real issue: growing internal dissent over May’s leadership and the controversial return of Pedneault. With party members set to vote on the co-leadership motion, the Green Party now finds itself not only battling internal divisions but also facing scrutiny over its response to independent media coverage.
