LISBON — The Portuguese ecological party, LIVRE, has issued a sharp condemnation of the recent military strikes against Iran by the United States and Israel. Describing the attacks as a blatant violation of international law, the party warned that such actions push the region—and the world—closer to a large-scale conflict.
Upholding International Law Above All
LIVRE emphasized that the defense of international law must be consistent, regardless of the nature of the targeted regime. While the party remains a critic of the oppressive Ayatollah regime, it argues that military escalation undermines the global order.
“Defending international law means condemning all attacks that do not respect the United Nations Charter,” the party stated in a press release. “With this series of strikes, Trump and Netanyahu are proving once again that their objective is a global order based on the ‘law of the strongest’ rather than the rule of law.”
Concerns Over Portugal’s Involvement: The Lajes Base
A major point of contention for the party is the potential use of Portuguese territory to facilitate these strikes. LIVRE has formally questioned the Portuguese Government regarding the role of the Lajes Air Base (located in the Azores) in supporting U.S. Armed Forces operations.
Key demands from LIVRE:
- Accountability: An urgent investigation into Portugal’s logistical involvement in the strikes.
- Diplomatic Clarity: The party has already used official parliamentary channels to demand answers from the Government.
- Ceasefire: An immediate halt to all military actions to prevent a regional catastrophe.
A Call for Diplomacy
LIVRE maintains that the safety of civilians and global stability can only be guaranteed through respect for sovereignty and human rights.
“Respect for international law is essential, however condemnable the regime in charge of a country may be,” the statement continued. “It is crucial to ensure an immediate ceasefire and a return to diplomatic dialogue.”
