25 years later, Greens are everywhere

BRUSSELS / CAPE TOWN / CANBERRA – Twenty-five years ago, the adoption of the Global Greens Charter laid the foundation for a unified political vision for the planet. Today, what was once viewed as a marginal protest movement has emerged as a cornerstone of global governance. From city councils to national government coalitions, Greens are no longer just advocates—they are decision-makers.

A Transcontinental Breakthrough

The track record of the past two and a half decades reflects a growing political maturity. In Europe, the movement has moved from the opposition benches to shaping national agendas, particularly in Germany and Finland. At the local level, urban transition laboratories have flourished in cities like Grenoble (France) and Brighton (UK), proving the effectiveness of Green policies in practice.

Green influence now extends far beyond the West. In the Asia–Pacific region, Greens have become durable governing partners in New Zealand and decisive parliamentary power-brokers in Australia. Meanwhile, growing “people power” is shifting the political landscape in South Korea and Taiwan.

New Frontiers in Africa and the Americas

A defining trend of this decade is the rooting of Green politics in the Global South. In Africa, the election of pioneers like Dr. Frank Habineza has paved the way for a new generation of Green parliamentarians in Senegal and Morocco.

The momentum is equally strong across the Americas. While Canada has solidified its parliamentary presence, it is in Latin America—specifically Brazil, Colombia, and Chile—where political ecology is becoming an essential shield for biodiversity and social justice.

A Milestone Event for 2026

To mark this quarter-century of progress, the Global Greens will host an international event on Thursday, April 16, and Friday, April 17, 2026. This online summit will serve as a platform to reaffirm the Charter’s principles in the face of today’s climate and democratic crises.

“The values we share matter more than ever,” the organization stated. The event is free and open to the public upon registration, signaling a commitment to broad mobilization for the next 25 years of Green breakthroughs.
