The Social Democratic Party, which leads the national government, acknowledged last Wednesday that it had lost the Copenhagen municipality, as well as its losses in numerous other localities during the municipal and regional elections. This party, led by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, had administered the capital since 1938. Nationally, the Social Democratic Party is expected to control 26 municipalities, down from 44 of the country’s 98.

For its part, the Green Party, SF – Green Left, has achieved its second-best result ever in the municipal elections. The party obtained 11.1% of the vote nationally, a 3.5-point increase compared to the 2021 municipal elections, and is now represented in 96 municipalities.

“It makes me both proud, happy and deeply humble. Because it shows that SF stands strong as a people’s party that can gather support throughout Denmark,” says SF’s chairwoman, Pia Olsen Dyhr.

This means that the city council and regional council chambers for the next four years will be filled with skilled SF members who will stand guard over our immediate welfare every day: more educators in daycare institutions, more time and presence for our elderly, and strong communities for children and young people.

It also means more local forces that can drive the green transition forward with better public transport, more nature and clean drinking water.

SF now secures five new mayoral posts:

Rosa Lykke Yde, Randers
Serdal Benli, Gladsaxe
Mikael Ralf Baade Larsen, Lejre
Anders Wolf, Hvidovre (re-elected)
Sisse Marie Welling, Copenhagen (Mayor)

“They will set a clear and unifying direction in their municipalities – with calm, openness and a willingness to find solutions together. They will become mayors who listen, build bridges and take responsibility for the development of their local areas”, says SF’s chairman, Pia Olsen Dyhr proudly.

Copenhagen’s mayoral post in particular marks a historic change after over 100 years of social democratic city government.

Sisse Marie Welling will become Copenhagen’s new mayoral post after a broad agreement with the Unity Party, Alternative, Venstre, De Konservative, De Radikale and Dansk Folkeparti.
