The Dutch Greens consider this good news for all bus users. Last Tuesday, the Senate passed the private member’s bill introduced by Habtamu de Hoop (GroenLinks-PvdA) and Olger van Dijk (NSC). This law authorizes provinces to create their own transport companies.

Habtamu Emke de Hoop of the Labour Party (PvdA) stated that everyone should now be able to rely on quality public transport, even outside the Randstad. This is thanks to the law, which has just been approved by the House of Representatives. This law allows provinces to regain local control over the organization of public transport.

Years of market forces have caused bus routes to disappear or become unreliable in many regions. We are finally turning the tide. Thanks to this law, provinces can organize their own public transport, so that buses run where people need them – reliably, affordably, and close by.

Sparsely populated regions

The proposal, the Provincial Public Transport Concessions Act, allows provinces to establish their own transport companies if market players withdraw or show no interest. This allows them, for example, to still offer good public transport in sparsely populated regions.

Senate approves law for public transport in the province

The law received broad support in the Senate: a large majority of parties voted in favor. Together, we are taking an important step towards socially responsible and sustainable public transport – for everyone, everywhere.
